This beautiful original poster was made for the exhibition of Picasso's Drawings of a Half Century at the Berggruen & Cie Gallery.
This poster is based on Picasso's 1907 work entitled Marin rolling a cigarette.

Berggruen & Cie Gallery was founded in 1947 by Heinz Berggruen.

Heinz Berggruen, who was born into a Jewish family, had to go into exile in 1936 in the United States to escape Nazi oppression. He did not return to Germany until the end of the war, as an American citizen.

In 1947, he moved to Paris where, after unearthing an album of drawings by Toulouse-Lautrec, he opened a gallery in the Place Dauphine on the Ile de la Cité.

Berggruen acquired an international reputation in the field of prints, notably after organizing the first exhibition of Klee's engravings in 1950 and that of Matisse's "papiers découpés" in 1953. He was also a close friend of Picasso.
His activity as a gallery owner allowed him to assemble a rich collection of modern art, starting with the Klee and Picasso that he accumulated by the dozen.
