Original poster of Serpan's exhibition in 1977 at the Beaulieu Abbey.

Jaroslav Sossountzov Serpan, born on June 4, 1922 in Karlštejn near Prague and died on May 12, 1976 in the Pyrenees of Ariège, is a French-Czech artist.

Arrived in France in 1926, Jaroslav Serpan continued in 1939 studies at the Sorbonne in biology and mathematics. In 1953, he defended his thesis in statistical biology and then taught at the University of Paris VII. He was passionate about painting and writing, techniques that he developed as a self-taught artist: he had a dual career as a teacher and as a visual artist.

At the end of the Second World War, he founded with Yves Bonnefoy and Claude Tarnaud the review La Révolution la nuit.

From 1946 to 1948, he was a member of the surrealist group. He exhibited at the great event Le Surréalisme in 1947 at the Maeght gallery (Paris).

From 1951 onwards, he moved away from André Breton's group and developed, under the influence of Wols and Michel Tapié, his own pictorial style, soon to be linked to informal art and lyrical abstraction. Later, he experimented with collage, sculpture and mural ceramics.
