Original poster by Albert Marquet 🇫🇷 (1875-1947), a French painter and draughtsman.

Coming from a modest background, he was encouraged by his mother to train in Paris, where he became particularly close to Henri Matisse.

In solidarity with the Fauvist movement, he did not let himself be influenced by the other currents of post-impressionism and, from the 1910s, met with a success that allowed him to live comfortably from his art.

Marquet devoted himself to painting landscapes, natural or urban, often represented in overhang, with a strong presence of water.

He painted from the ground up and his repetitive subjects are reminiscent of the Impressionist series. Unlike the Impressionists, however, he simplified them, emphasizing the contours with a dark line.

His technique of synthesizing forms already made Léon Werth say that he was trying to paint not the essence, but the essential.

The Arcachon basin is a mesotidal lagoon located in the Landes de Gascogne, in Gironde, between the towns of La Teste-de-Buch to the south, Lège-Cap-Ferret to the west and the delta of the Leyre to the east.
