Very rare 1935 poster featuring a Spanish Carlist soldier.
Carlism (Spanish: carlismo) is a Spanish legitimist political movement that emerged in the 1830s to claim the throne for the eldest branch of the Spanish Bourbons.

This long-lasting movement, which has a conservative and anti-liberal tendency, has had a fundamental influence on the political life of the country since its appearance until the end of Francoism in the 1970s. Throughout its existence, it has been one of the main actors in the struggles of the monarchy and the Church against liberalism and modernism.

Strong in the Basque Country, Navarre, Aragon and Andalusia, the Carlists launched three revolts, known as the Carlist Wars (1833-1839, 1846-1849, 1872-1876), during which they tried in vain to seize the Spanish throne.

They participated in the Civil War on the side of General Franco, but did not accept the latter's designated successor, King Juan Carlos I.
