Beautiful TWA travel poster for flights to Washington, D.C., by 20th-century illustrator Frank Lacano. The poster depicts the silhouette of an airplane flying over Washington, D.C., with the Capitol and the Lincoln Memorial.
In the 1950s and 1960s, Trans World Airlines (TWA) was one of the world's leading passenger carriers. In 1929, rather than deliver mail as many carriers did at the time, Transcontinental Air Transport (TWA's forerunner) decided to break into the passenger market by offering transnational flights. With famed international pilot Charles Lindbergh as chairman of the technical committee and, later, millionaire Howard Hughes holding a majority stake in TWA, the airline acquired celebrity status.

The company's advertising posters echo TWA's glittering reputation. They illustrate the lure of travel with colorful, exquisitely drawn scenes. The posters were explicitly created to inspire dreams of adventure in people at home and abroad. Present in airports, railway stations, travel agencies, airline ticket offices, hotels and on billboards in major cities, the posters played an important role in the sale of airline tickets.
