Advertising poster, realized by Aljanvic in 1948, for the Phillips brand.

Koninklijke Philips N.V., better known as the Philips company, is a Dutch electronics company based in Amsterdam. It is one of the world's largest household appliance, medical equipment and lighting groups.

During World War II, on May 9, 1940, Philips executives were informed of the German invasion of the Netherlands the next day. They decided to flee to the United States, taking a large portion of the company's capital with them. This allowed them to run the company remotely during the war, having moved it (on paper) to the Dutch Antilles. After the war, Philips returned to Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Many of the research centers had been hidden or padlocked, so after the Germans withdrew, Philips could quickly resume operations. During the 1940s and 1950s, science and technology boomed. The Philips research laboratories were part of this momentum: swivel heads for razors, numerous advances in transistors and integrated circuits, contributions to the development of television recording, transmission and reproduction.
