After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he attended classes with Charles Cottet and Jacques-Émile Blanche, he specialized in etching.
In 1907, he exhibited at the annual salon of the Société nationale des beaux-arts.
Incorporated into the infantry in 1914, he then joined the air force as an observer-photographer and ended the war with the rank of lieutenant.
He likes to say that it is his vacations spent in Brittany that will provide him with the inspiration for many compositions.
