Maldives Airlanka Circa 1980

This original travel poster was produced circa 1980 for Air Lanka, promoting the Maldives as an idyllic destination in the Indian Ocean.

The poster presents a peaceful tropical scene photographed in the shallow turquoise waters of a Maldivian lagoon. Two figures exchange a large seashell in the foreground, while a small palm-covered island, a traditional thatched building and local boats appear in the distance. The restrained composition and expansive water create an atmosphere of isolation, tranquillity and untouched natural beauty.

The word “Maldives” is prominently displayed in white against a black band at the top of the composition. In the lower-right corner appears Air Lanka’s original emblem together with the airline’s evocative slogan, “A Taste of Paradise.” The minimalist typography allows the photograph to dominate, presenting the islands themselves as a remote and luxurious escape.

Air Lanka was established in 1979 as Sri Lanka’s new national airline, replacing Air Ceylon. Operating from Colombo, the company developed connections throughout Asia, Europe and the Indian Ocean, including services to Malé. In 1999, Air Lanka was rebranded as SriLankan Airlines.

The poster belongs to an important period in the development of Maldivian tourism. International resort tourism had only begun during the previous decade, and airline advertising played a central role in introducing the archipelago’s coral islands, clear lagoons and secluded beaches to travellers around the world.

Printed in colour by offset lithography, this original poster reflects the transition from illustrated travel advertising to the atmospheric colour photography increasingly favoured by airlines during the late 1970s and early 1980s. It is a beautiful and evocative document from the early history of tourism in the Maldives and the original Air Lanka era.
