Created for the original French release of Stanley Kubrick’s landmark science-fiction film, this original 1968 poster presents 2001: A Space Odyssey under its French title, 2001: L’Odyssée de l’espace. Featuring artwork by the celebrated American space artist Robert McCall, the poster was printed in France by Lalande-Courbet in Wissous.
An immense wheel-shaped orbital station dominates the upper section of the composition, viewed from a dramatic perspective above the Earth. A slender spacecraft approaches beneath its curving structure, while a distant celestial body appears against the surrounding darkness. Beams of light, technical details and flashes of red create a convincing vision of space travel that appeared astonishingly futuristic in 1968.
The deep black background allows the blue-green, ivory and metallic tones of the spacecraft to emerge with exceptional intensity. At the bottom, the monumental yellow French title provides a bold contrast, accompanied by restrained red credits identifying MGM, Stanley Kubrick and the principal actors. The expansive dark area between image and lettering enhances the impression of silence, isolation and infinite space.
Directed by Stanley Kubrick and developed in collaboration with writer Arthur C. Clarke, 2001: A Space Odyssey transformed the science-fiction genre through its philosophical narrative, scientific realism, pioneering visual effects and unforgettable depiction of the HAL 9000 computer. Its exploration of human evolution, artificial intelligence and extraterrestrial life continues to influence filmmakers, designers and artists.
Robert McCall (1919–2010) became internationally renowned for his imaginative yet technically convincing visions of space exploration. Alongside his work connected with NASA, he created some of the most memorable promotional paintings for Kubrick’s film. Combining an iconic cinematic subject with McCall’s spectacular orbital imagery, this original French poster is an exceptional acquisition for collectors of science fiction, film history and twentieth-century graphic design.
