Livreur en luge Circa 1900

Created circa 1900, this original gouache by Rossotty is entitled Livreur en luge, or Deliveryman with a Sledge. Signed by the artist in the lower-left corner, this unique work combines the immediacy of an illustration with the strong visual clarity associated with early poster design.

The composition depicts a young deliveryman guiding a wooden sledge heavily laden with parcels down a snow-covered slope. Dressed in a fur hat, thick jacket, patterned trousers, gloves and sturdy boots, he leans forward against the weight of his cargo, giving the scene a convincing sense of physical effort and movement.

Rossotty constructs the image through broad areas of opaque color. The brilliant yellow sky contrasts dramatically with the pale snow, distant blue mountains and dark clothing of the central figure. Strong diagonals created by the hillside, the courier’s stride and the runners of the sledge carry the eye energetically across the composition.

The subject provides a fascinating glimpse of winter transportation at the turn of the twentieth century, before motorized vehicles transformed commercial delivery.
