Produced in Japan circa 1914, this original poster printed in colour lithograph is entitled The Japanese Second Squadron Blockade of Kiaochow Bay. It belongs to the bilingual series The Illustration of the Great European War, which presented dramatic episodes from the First World War to a Japanese audience.
The nocturnal composition depicts Japanese naval vessels navigating the rough waters of Kiaochow Bay beneath a crescent moon. An early military aircraft flies overhead as powerful beams of light cross the dark sky, while smoke and flashes on the distant coast suggest bombardment and military activity around the bay.
Kiaochow Bay, now known as Jiaozhou Bay, surrounded the German-controlled port of Tsingtao, present-day Qingdao in China. After entering the war on the Allied side in August 1914, Japan dispatched its Second Squadron to blockade the German naval base. Japanese forces, supported by a smaller British contingent, subsequently besieged and captured Tsingtao in November 1914.
The image combines traditional Japanese printing techniques with the modern machinery of twentieth-century warfare. Deep greens, blues and blacks create a theatrical atmosphere, while the foaming waves, crossing beams and aircraft introduce movement and suspense. The scene should be understood as a patriotic and dramatized interpretation of the operation rather than a strictly documentary representation.
With its bilingual Japanese and English captions, atmospheric maritime imagery and important historical subject, this original poster is a fascinating document of Japan’s participation in the First World War. It will appeal to collectors of Japanese prints, military history, naval aviation and early twentieth-century propaganda.
