This original 1969 concert poster was designed by David Singer for three evenings presented by Bill Graham at Winterland in San Francisco. Catalogued as BG-208 in the renowned Bill Graham poster series, it advertised performances held on 26, 27 and 28 December 1969.
The programme was headlined by Sly and the Family Stone and Spirit, accompanied by Southwind and the jazz-rock group Ballin’ Jack. The psychedelic visual environment accompanying the concerts was created by the celebrated San Francisco light-show collective Little Princess 109.
Singer’s composition combines classical architecture with a vast celestial body suspended above an endlessly receding landscape. The monumental moon, green-toned columns and tiny birds create a dreamlike sense of scale, while the exceptionally elegant lettering gives the poster a refined Art Nouveau character.
David Singer was one of the most prolific designers associated with Bill Graham’s concerts during the late 1960s and early 1970s. He became particularly known for his sophisticated collages, assembled from photographic material and combined with distinctive hand-drawn typography. This original poster was printed in San Francisco by Tea Lautrec Litho.
An evocative document of San Francisco’s psychedelic music culture, this original 1969 printing unites an important lineup with one of Singer’s most atmospheric designs. Its BG-208 catalogue designation and strong visual presence make it particularly desirable for collectors of psychedelic posters, American rock memorabilia and countercultural graphic design.
