Original 1966 second-printing concert poster for the “King Kong Memorial Dance,” presented by Family Dog Productions at San Francisco’s legendary Fillmore Auditorium. Catalogued as FD-2, it advertises the performance held on Saturday, 26 February 1966.

The concert brought together four notable groups from the emerging San Francisco rock scene: The Great! Society, featuring Grace Slick; The Grass Roots; Big Brother & the Holding Company, shortly before Janis Joplin joined the band; and Quicksilver Messenger Service.

The striking composition centres on a monumental photograph of a gorilla, accompanied by boldly varied typography and the celebrated Family Dog emblem. The design is attributed to promoter Chet Helms and pioneering psychedelic artist Wes Wilson, who created the Family Dog logo appearing in the upper-left corner.

This vintage second printing was produced shortly after the concert on white index stock, using black and tan inks. It can be identified by the Family Dog Productions copyright line at the lower left and the reference “No. 2-2” printed at the lower right.

An evocative document from the formative period of San Francisco’s psychedelic counterculture, this FD-2 poster captures the experimental spirit of the city’s early dance-concert scene. Its commanding imagery, important musical line-up and association with Family Dog make it a highly decorative piece of American music history.
