Original 1969 concert poster printed in lithograph and designed by American artist Greg Irons for a series of performances presented by Bill Graham at the Fillmore West in San Francisco. Catalogued as BG-167, the poster advertised concerts held from 3 to 6 April 1969.
The programme featured the British progressive rock group Procol Harum alongside the Buddy Miles Express and Blues Image. The accompanying psychedelic light show was created by the Brotherhood of Light, an important contributor to San Francisco’s immersive concert culture.
Irons conceived a wonderfully surreal composition in which a steam locomotive curves around the body of a monumental pink gorilla. Saturated colours, elaborate lettering and finely drawn mechanical details give the image a distinctive underground-comic character.
The poster was printed in San Francisco by Tea Lautrec Litho, the renowned workshop responsible for many of the most celebrated Bill Graham concert posters of the late 1960s. Greg Irons’ signature and the date “’69” appear within the composition at the lower left.
An outstanding document from the golden age of San Francisco psychedelic graphics, this original poster combines an important musical line-up with the imaginative draughtsmanship for which Greg Irons became known. Its powerful colour palette and remarkable imagery make it an exceptional decorative piece and a desirable example of American rock memorabilia.
