Original 1968 concert poster printed in lithograph and designed by Lee Conklin for performances presented by Bill Graham at the Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. Catalogued as BG-126, it advertised six evenings of music held from 25 to 30 June 1968.
Albert King, The Loading Zone and Rain performed during the first three evenings, followed by Ten Years After, Canned Heat and Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks from 28 to 30 June. The Holy See collective provided the accompanying psychedelic light show.
Conklin created a characteristically intricate composition resembling a surreal glacial landscape, formed from monumental lettering, fragmented human features and numerous miniature figures. Delicate blue linework is enlivened by dramatic red accents, encouraging the viewer to discover new details throughout the image.
Commissioned by legendary promoter Bill Graham, the poster was printed in San Francisco by Tea Lautrec Litho, the workshop responsible for many of the period’s celebrated psychedelic concert graphics. This is the original and only poster printing, produced on uncoated paper.
A remarkable example of Lee Conklin’s highly imaginative draughtsmanship, BG-126 captures the visual experimentation of San Francisco’s late-1960s music scene. Its important blues and rock line-up, elaborate imagery and strong association with the Fillmore make it a highly decorative and collectable piece of American music history.
