Original 1968 concert poster printed in lithograph and designed by Lee Conklin for performances presented by Bill Graham in San Francisco. Catalogued as BG-107, it advertised a concert at the Fillmore Auditorium on 15 February, followed by two evenings at Winterland on 16 and 17 February 1968.
The exceptional blues programme brought together the Butterfield Blues Band, the James Cotton Blues Band and legendary guitarist Albert King. The concerts were accompanied by a psychedelic light show created by the Holy See collective.
Conklin’s composition is centred upon a mysterious female figure whose body is ingeniously constructed from elongated hands and fingers. The surrounding musicians’ names merge into the image through highly stylised lettering, while the restrained palette of deep blue, vivid magenta and pale grey creates a striking visual intensity.
Commissioned by influential promoter Bill Graham, the poster was printed in San Francisco by Tea Lautrec Litho, the celebrated workshop closely associated with the city’s psychedelic concert scene. Conklin’s name appears at the lower left, while the Bill Graham copyright and BG-107 reference are printed along the lower edge.
A distinctive example of Lee Conklin’s surreal graphic language, this original poster unites three major figures of American blues within one of the artist’s most memorable early designs. Its remarkable imagery and connection with both the Fillmore and Winterland make it a highly collectable piece of San Francisco music history.
