This original 1954 Swiss poster was designed by R. Wyss for the 11th Swiss Exhibition of Agriculture, Horticulture and Forestry, held in Lucerne from 16 September to 11 October 1954. The event celebrated Switzerland’s agricultural production, cultivated landscapes and rural industries.
Wyss combines stylised images of a cow, a cockerel, crops, flowers and a woven basket within a lively collage-like composition. A pale tree trunk rises through the right side of the design, bringing together the exhibition’s agricultural, horticultural and forestry themes.
The poster employs a vibrant palette of green, red, yellow, black and earthy brown. Bold sans-serif lettering is arranged asymmetrically across the upper section, while the simplified forms and flat areas of colour give the composition a distinctly modern appearance.
Its clear typography, economical imagery and carefully balanced layout reflect the principles associated with post-war Swiss graphic design. Wyss transforms the exhibition’s varied subject matter into an immediately recognisable and highly decorative visual identity.
