ap_25244
East is east and west is west but Scheveningen is the best Circa 1930

This striking original Dutch tourism poster was created circa 1935 to promote Scheveningen, the celebrated North Sea resort adjoining The Hague. Its memorable slogan, “East is East and West is West, but Scheveningen is the best”, playfully adapts Rudyard Kipling’s famous phrase for an international audience.

Four black-and-white photographs present the resort’s many attractions: crowded beaches, swimmers enjoying the sea, fishing boats resting along the shoreline and a formal orchestral performance. Together, these images advertise Scheveningen as a destination combining outdoor recreation, traditional maritime life and sophisticated entertainment.

The photographs are arranged within a bold circular composition divided by a red compass. The letters W, N, O and Z represent the Dutch words for west, north, east and south, reinforcing the poster’s witty geographical slogan. Sporting figures, a waiter and a dancing harlequin animate the deep blue background and suggest the resort’s lively social atmosphere.

The design reflects the experimental graphic language of the 1930s, combining photography, typography and simplified illustration. Its dramatic navy, red and white palette provides a strong visual identity, while the curved English and Dutch lettering allows the text to become an integral part of the composition.

A highly decorative example of interwar European travel advertising, this original poster captures the fashionable and energetic character of Scheveningen during its development as an international seaside resort. It will appeal to collectors of Dutch graphic design, photographic posters and vintage coastal tourism imagery.

Original Poster

Tourism - Sport - Netherlands

Good condition, creases visible
