The Hamburg-Amerika Line was a transatlantic shipping line established in Hamburg, Germany, in 1847, and operated until 1970. This poster from 1935 promotes the Hamburg America Line for a Mediterranean cruise.
Before the First World War, the Hamburg-America Line was one of the world's largest fleets of commercial ships. After damaging many of its ships during the war years, Hapag (as it is also known) rebuilt its fleet in the 20s and 30s with sturdier, more efficient ships that helped it re-establish its image as a reliable, stable company to sail with.
Ottomar Carl Joseph Anton, born December 15, 1895 in Hamburg and died November 7, 1976 in the same city, was a German painter, graphic artist and university lecturer. He is best known for his posters for several shipping companies, as well as for his Waffen-SS propaganda posters.
