With La Jupe Ôtée (1906), Manuel Robbe once again captures the delicate boundary between modesty and sensuality—a recurring theme in his celebrated Belle Époque prints. The title, which translates to “The Skirt Removed”, reveals a moment suspended in time: a woman standing half-undressed in a cozy, private interior, somewhere between repose and ritual.

Executed in aquatint and soft-ground etching, Robbe’s technique lends softness to the scene—enhancing the warm palette and giving the figure a glowing presence amidst the sketchy detailing of the background. The light blush of the woman’s skin contrasts gently with the dark folds of her skirt, now partly dropped, hinting at vulnerability yet comfort.

Robbe’s work reflects both the aesthetic elegance and emotional complexity of turn-of-the-century Paris. His figures are never anonymous objects—they are people observed in moments of interiority, imbued with empathy and psychological nuance.
