Minimal, radical, and unmistakably visceral, this circa 1970 original exhibition poster for Lucio Fontana captures the conceptual power of his groundbreaking Concetto Spaziale series. Designed for a show at Galleria Il Quadro in Biella and published by Silvio Zamorani Editore, the poster presents one of Fontana’s iconic red monochromes, pierced by a vertical line of precisely spaced punctured holes.

Set against a stark off-white border, the red field evokes both violence and transcendence. Fontana’s "buchi" (holes) were a bold rejection of traditional painting; they cut through the surface to introduce literal depth—spatial, philosophical, and spiritual. This graphic reproduction translates that gesture into a visual manifesto for the Spatialism movement he founded, collapsing the boundary between canvas and sculpture.

Unlike many posters of the era, this one carries no image, title, or date beyond the artist’s name—letting the artwork itself become the message. That choice underscores Fontana’s conviction that art should go beyond representation, embracing a new dimension that reflects the space-age anxieties and possibilities of postwar Europe.

Both elegant and confrontational, this poster is a seminal artifact of 20th-century avant-garde experimentation, and a striking tribute to an artist who literally punctured the surface of modern art.
