Ancient meets modern on this famous "Italia" travel poster designed by A.M. Cassandre (1901-1968). Issued by the Italian tourist board and the Italian railway system, the piece features the columns of a Roman ruin overlayed by the Virgin Mary cradling Christ, with "Italia" printed just below in the tri-colors of the national flag adopted in the the late 18th century. Cassandre's most famous work is the poster for the maiden voyage of the ocean liner Normandie, and he also completed a series of major posters for the French railway system including the often reproduced Etoile du Nord. In later years, Cassandre designed several covers for Harper's Bazaar, the logo for Yves Saint Laurent, and became a stage, set and theatrical designer.
