From the 1960s onwards, Northern Ireland experienced a period of unparalleled violence and political unrest. Several paramilitary organizations took up arms to fight against the British presence on their soil. This was the beginning of the IRA (Irish Republican Army). New political parties were born, notably Sinn Féin ("ourselves"), which advocated, among other things, the reunification of the two countries.
