This stunning 1937 original travel poster by Roland Hugon was commissioned by the PLM (Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée) railway company to promote luxurious overnight travel to the Côte d’Azur, the fabled French Riviera.

Roland Hugon’s Art Deco composition captures the dreamlike allure of the South of France. Against a luminous indigo sky sprinkled with stars, the poster depicts an idyllic coastal village with pastel Mediterranean architecture, palm trees, and sleek white yachts draped in nautical flags, symbolising effortless glamour and affluence. In the foreground, a streamlined black PLM train cuts across midnight tracks, illuminated by the bright promise of dawn on the Riviera.

The slogan “Le pays de votre rêve est au bout de votre nuit” (The land of your dreams is at the end of your night) evokes the poetic fantasy of boarding a night train in Paris and waking up by azure seas, golden light, and coastal luxury – an irresistible invitation during the golden age of train travel.

Roland Hugon was an established French graphic artist celebrated for his refined Art Deco style, vivid colours, and elegant geometry. His posters, often advertising rail, maritime, and airline travel, captured the optimism and chic modernity of 1930s France.

Printed by Editions Real Marseille, this poster stands as an icon of pre-war French tourism advertising, where PLM’s visual campaigns defined modern travel culture. Today, it remains a collector’s treasure for Art Deco enthusiasts, Francophiles, and interior designers seeking authentic Riviera nostalgia.
