Lautrec's graphic posters, intended for artists, such as Jane Avril, or dance halls, such as the Moulin Rouge, embody the bubbling, frenetic spirit of nightlife in fin de siècle Paris. Avril, a longtime friend of the artist, commissioned this print to advertise her cabaret show at the Jardin de Paris in 1893. Lautrec's bold composition is characterized by a radically oblique perspective, severe cropping, flattened forms, and sinuous lines, like those depicting Avril's ruffled costume. Avril's "cancan" kick, one of her signature dance moves, is echoed formally in the vertical thrust of the double bass, captured by an invisible musician. To create this print, Lautrec used several lithographic stones, one for each color-bright black, acid orange, yellow, and green.
