Beautiful poster by Charles Toché for Chemins de fer d'Orléans in 1892: Bains de mer de Bretagne - Pornichet - Bonne source

Charles Toché, born July 26, 1851 in Nantes and died August 31, 1916 in Paris, was a French painter, lithographer, poster artist and illustrator.

Charles Toché studied architecture under Félix Thomas, a painter who had retired to Nantes and was one of the discoverers of Nineveh.

After his architectural studies, Toché spent five years in Venice, where he studied and copied the works of the Italians. It was there that he met Édouard Manet.

In 1880, he painted the decor for the famous lupanar Le Chabanais, which earned him the nickname "Pubis de Chabanais "2.

From 1875 to 1888, he painted historical and allegorical frescoes in the main gallery of the Château de Chenonceau, using the Italian masters' process of lime, sand and colored earth, and then created cartoons for stained-glass windows. While working at Chenonceau, he met Gustave Flaubert, who asked him to illustrate his novel La Tentation de Saint-Antoine.

In 1887, he exhibited his Chenonceau fresco cartoons at the Georges Petit gallery, making a name for himself with the Parisian public.

For the 1889 Universal Exhibition, he worked on the decoration of various palaces: the Liberal Arts Palace, the South African Palace, the Argentine Palace, the Wine Palace, etc., as well as a poster.

He also painted frescoes for the Graslin theater in Nantes and the Olympia in Paris.
