This original 1947 poster was created for the exhibition of Henri Matisse’s legendary art book "Jazz", published by Tériade. Held at the renowned Pierre Berès gallery in Paris from December 3 to December 20, 1947, the exhibition showcased one of Matisse’s most groundbreaking works, a vibrant collection of cut-out compositions that redefined modern art.

"Jazz" was a radical departure from traditional painting, marking Matisse’s transition to his iconic cut-out technique (gouache découpée). Initially conceived as a series of illustrations for a book, the project evolved into an artistic masterpiece filled with bold colors, fluid forms, and dynamic movement, reflecting themes of circus, improvisation, and rhythm—a clear parallel to the spontaneity of jazz music.

Published in a limited edition of only 250 copies, Jazz remains one of the most coveted artist books of the 20th century. The accompanying exhibition at Pierre Berès helped introduce this revolutionary work to the public, further cementing Matisse’s status as a pioneer of modernism and abstraction.

This rare 1947 exhibition poster serves as a historical document of one of Matisse’s most innovative periods, encapsulating the spirit of artistic freedom and experimentation that defined his late career.
