This original 1937 French poster was designed by Eugène Beaudouin and Marcel Lods for the Paris International Exhibition. Officially titled the Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne, the event celebrated the relationship between art, architecture, industry and modern technology.

The composition evokes Paris transformed into a spectacular nocturnal city. Searchlights, illuminated architecture, fountains and the Eiffel Tower emerge through layers of light, while the city’s name appears to glow across the deep blue sky.

Beaudouin and Lods employ a sophisticated palette of midnight blue, white and soft red, subtly recalling the colours of the French flag. The dramatic contrasts, atmospheric gradients and elegant typography embody the refined modernism of late Art Deco design. The poster was printed in Paris by Jules Simon S.A.

Eugène Beaudouin and Marcel Lods were influential French modernist architects who collaborated on several innovative projects during the interwar period. Their interest in new materials, construction methods and contemporary urban life is reflected in this imaginative vision of the exhibition.

A rare and atmospheric document from one of the defining cultural events of interwar Paris, this original poster would make an excellent addition to a collection devoted to world exhibitions, French architecture, Art Deco or Parisian history.
