Original photographic poster produced around 1955 by the French Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Tourism to promote holidays in the Hautes-Alpes. The photograph was taken by Karl Machatschek, also known professionally as KAMA.
The image depicts an angler fishing in the turbulent waters of the Guil, upstream from Abriès in the Queyras. Surrounded by dense forests and snow-covered mountain peaks, the solitary figure conveys the unspoilt character of the French Alps.
Machatschek’s carefully balanced composition leads the viewer along the rushing mountain torrent towards the dramatic peaks in the distance. The contrast between the moving water, colourful alpine vegetation and monumental landscape creates a particularly vivid image of outdoor adventure.
Karl Machatschek (1906–1994) was a photographer specialising in mountain landscapes and winter sports. Working principally around Megève and Chamonix, he produced numerous photographs for French tourism campaigns during the mid-twentieth century.
This original poster was printed in colour offset by Georges Lang of Paris. It is an attractive example of post-war French tourism advertising and will appeal to collectors of Alpine imagery, fishing memorabilia, photographic posters and vintage travel design.
