Original travel poster produced circa 1960 for Intourist, the official Soviet agency responsible for promoting travel throughout the USSR. It presents Riga, then the capital of the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic, as a destination rich in architecture, history and traditional craftsmanship.
The large colour photograph offers an elevated view across Riga’s historic centre towards the River Daugava. The medieval rooftops, church spires and imposing Riga Castle create a striking panorama of the Latvian capital.
The photograph is set against a warm wood-effect background and accompanied by an octagonal piece of decorative Latvian metalwork inset with amber-coloured details. This combination of urban photography and traditional ornament reflects the distinctive visual identity of the Baltic region.
The restrained composition is completed by a horizontal cream band bearing the blue Intourist emblem. Its elegant photographic style differs from the illustrated travel posters of earlier decades and reflects the increasingly modern image presented to international visitors during the post-war period.
This original poster is an attractive example of Soviet tourism advertising and mid-century photographic design. It will appeal to collectors of Intourist material, Baltic history, Soviet graphics and vintage European travel posters.
