This original poster was created in 1978 by Raymond Savignac to announce the newly opened Musée de l’Affiche at 18 rue de Paradis in Paris. The museum was dedicated to preserving and exhibiting the history of posters and graphic advertising.
Savignac transforms the poster itself into a welcoming character. A formally dressed man bows politely to the visitor, while his head has been replaced by a tightly rolled poster—a humorous visual metaphor for the museum and its collection.
The composition uses a vivid yellow background and red carpet to frame the dark blue figure. Broad hand-drawn lines, deliberately naïve colouring and the immediate visual gag are all characteristic of Savignac’s distinctive graphic language.
Raymond Savignac (1907–2002) was one of the most celebrated French poster designers of the twentieth century. Renowned for reducing advertising messages to a single witty image, he created memorable campaigns through humour, simplicity and bold colour.
Bearing Savignac’s printed signature, this original poster was printed in colour lithograph by Bedos & Cie in Paris. It is an important document in the history of French poster collecting and will appeal to admirers of Savignac, Parisian cultural history and twentieth-century graphic design.
