Original poster created for Documenta IX, the influential international contemporary art exhibition held in Kassel, Germany, from 13 June to 20 September 1992. This ninth edition was directed by the Belgian curator Jan Hoet and brought together 195 artists from around the world.

The poster was designed by Belgian graphic designer Marleen Deceukelier in collaboration with Sonny van Hoecke. It incorporates Dietmar Guderian’s drawing Leibniz, Newton and Displacement, using mathematical diagrams to express the exhibition’s central idea of displacement.

White handwritten equations, parabolic curves and directional arrows cover a dark green background structured by a fine red grid. The word “displacement”, highlighted in green, interrupts the mathematical working, while the dates and location appear vertically in vivid yellow.

Deceukelier was closely associated with the Museum of Contemporary Art in Ghent, now S.M.A.K., where she created graphic material for numerous exhibitions. Her intellectually playful design transforms a complex curatorial concept into an immediate and memorable visual composition.

This original poster is a striking document of European graphic design and contemporary art culture during the early 1990s. It will appeal to collectors of Documenta material, exhibition posters, conceptual art and postmodern graphic design.
