This original 1959 Italian travel poster was issued by the Ente Provinciale per il Turismo of Como in association with ENIT, the Italian national tourism organisation. Produced in French, it promoted Lake Como to international visitors as one of northern Italy’s most elegant destinations.
The photograph depicts a stately lakeside villa rising above a stone terrace at the water’s edge. Deep blue water, wooded hills and distant mountains create an idyllic view of the celebrated Lombardy landscape.
The naturalistic colour photography is complemented by large, flowing blue lettering reading “Lac de Côme.” Its restrained layout and generous cream border reflect the clean, sophisticated style of mid-century European tourism advertising.
ENIT played an important role in promoting Italy abroad, working alongside provincial tourism boards to present the country’s landscapes, historic towns and cultural heritage. Posters such as this helped establish Lake Como’s enduring international image as a destination of beauty and refinement.
