This original 1906 French poster, entitled Aux Jeunes Français, or “To Young Frenchmen”, reproduces a speech delivered by P. Bourgeois, deputy for the Vendée, at the opening of a session of the Chamber of Deputies on 9 January 1906. Published by Le Petit Patriote, the text was addressed to the French public and particularly to younger generations.
The design is dominated by monumental black lettering set against a warm orange-red background. Beneath the title, the complete speech is arranged in two closely printed columns, framed by a simple typographical ornament and concluding with the emphatic declaration “Vive la France!”.
The speech appeals to patriotism, national unity, civic responsibility and the defence of France. At the foot of the poster, readers of every age and social background are encouraged to revisit the text regularly and to share it with their children.
Its austere typographical presentation gives the poster the appearance of a public proclamation. Created during the Belle Époque, it reflects the strong patriotic culture of early twentieth-century France and the importance placed upon transmitting national and republican values to the country’s youth.
A compelling historical document, this original poster would make an interesting addition to a collection devoted to French political history, patriotic ephemera, typography or Belle Époque printed material.
