Created circa 1900, this original educational poster by Dr. Gustave Philippon forms part of the celebrated French public health series "Alcoolisme – Les Méfaits de l'Alcool" ("Alcoholism – The Harmful Effects of Alcohol"). Produced during the height of the temperance movement in France, the poster was designed as an educational tool to warn the public about the physical, moral, and social consequences of excessive alcohol consumption. Today, it stands as a fascinating example of early twentieth-century social reform through graphic art.

The composition presents a series of dramatic illustrated scenes depicting the devastating effects attributed to alcoholism. At the top, an intoxicated man is shown throwing himself into the Seine in an act of suicide, while below, additional vignettes portray violent crime, family tragedy, imprisonment, and homelessness. Accompanied by explanatory captions, the illustrations were intended to educate viewers by linking excessive drinking with personal ruin and societal decline. The highly narrative format reflects the educational methods employed in French schools and public institutions during the Belle Époque.

The poster was created under the direction of Dr. Gustave Philippon, one of France's leading advocates for public hygiene and anti-alcohol education. Through lectures, publications, and richly illustrated educational materials, Philippon sought to raise awareness of alcoholism as both a medical condition and a major social issue. His visual campaigns were widely distributed in classrooms, hospitals, municipal buildings, and temperance organizations throughout France.

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, France experienced growing concern over alcohol consumption, particularly the widespread use of absinthe and industrial spirits. Physicians, educators, and public officials increasingly viewed alcoholism as a threat to public health, productivity, and national strength. Educational charts such as this one became an essential component of nationwide prevention campaigns, combining scientific arguments with striking visual storytelling to influence public behavior.

Unlike commercial advertising posters, these educational prints were produced primarily for institutional use and were often displayed in schools, hospitals, town halls, and lecture halls. Because they were intended for practical use rather than preservation, relatively few examples have survived in excellent condition, making original copies increasingly desirable among collectors of medical history, public health ephemera, Belle Époque prints, and educational graphics.

Beyond its historical significance, Alcoolisme – Les Méfaits de l'Alcool provides remarkable insight into changing social attitudes toward addiction, morality, and public health at the dawn of the twentieth century. Its detailed illustrations, documentary value, and powerful visual message make it one of the most compelling examples of French educational poster design from the period.

Today, this original Gustave Philippon poster is appreciated not only as an important historical document but also as a striking work of graphic art, illustrating how illustration, medicine, and social reform came together during the Belle Époque.
