This original poster was published in 1958 by Intourist, the official Soviet travel agency, to promote winter tourism in the USSR to a French-speaking audience. Its message, “Visitez l’URSS en hiver,” invited foreign travellers to discover the country’s cities, culture and winter sports.
The playful composition features a pipe-smoking tourist wrapped in a heavy black coat and fur hat, carrying skis, poles and a suitcase. Colourful luggage labels advertise Moscow, Kiev and Leningrad, while the Intourist emblem identifies the organisation behind the campaign.
Stylised architectural landmarks rise behind the traveller, including a Soviet skyscraper and a classical theatre. Horizontal grey and white bands evoke falling snow and winter skies, while the large abstract red sun adds warmth and visual energy to the scene.
The poster reflects the more approachable graphic language adopted by Soviet tourism advertising during the late 1950s. Its simplified forms, humorous character and restrained palette present the USSR as an accessible destination offering both cultural sightseeing and outdoor recreation.
Printed in colour offset, this original poster is an attractive example of mid-century Soviet travel advertising. Its charming illustration, strong modernist design and links to the history of Intourist will appeal to collectors of Russian graphics, skiing posters and international tourism memorabilia.
