This original French cinema poster was issued in 1970 for the theatrical re-release of Thunderball, the 1965 James Bond film released in France as Opération Tonnerre. Created for the “Viva James Bond” campaign, it features artwork by Yves Thos and graphic design by Jouineau Bourduge.
Directed by Terence Young and starring Sean Connery, Thunderball was the fourth film in the Eon Productions James Bond series. This re-release poster retains the original film credits, including Claudine Auger, Adolfo Celi and Luciana Paluzzi, while presenting them within a distinctive new promotional design.
Sean Connery appears in his dinner jacket, holding a pistol beside a vivid red target pierced by bullets. A glamorous blonde figure kneels at his feet, while the monumental words “Viva James Bond” rise vertically in saturated shades of magenta and red.
The composition combines Yves Thos’s detailed figurative illustration with Jouineau Bourduge’s bold typographic treatment. Set against a largely white background, the carefully isolated figures and intense blocks of colour create a striking balance between elegance, danger and the provocative glamour associated with the early Bond films.
A highly decorative and increasingly collectable piece of French cinema advertising, this original poster captures Sean Connery at the height of his association with James Bond. It will appeal particularly to collectors of 007 memorabilia, vintage film posters and post-war French graphic design.
