This original 1968 concert poster printed in lithograph was designed by Lee Conklin for Bill Graham’s San Francisco concert series. Catalogued as BG-138, it promotes the “Super Session” performances by Mike Bloomfield, Al Kooper and friends at the Fillmore West.
The concerts took place from September 26 to 28, 1968, with It’s a Beautiful Day and The Loading Zone completing the line-up. The performances also featured the psychedelic projections of the Holy See light show.
Bloomfield and Kooper had recently collaborated on the highly influential album Super Session. Their Fillmore West appearances brought the spontaneous studio concept to the stage, and recordings from these three evenings were subsequently released as the 1969 live album The Live Adventures of Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper.
Conklin fills the design with distorted faces, intertwined bodies and organic forms that appear to dissolve into one another. The intricate black drawing is intensified by areas of turquoise, yellow and deep red, while the musicians’ names emerge through fluid, almost hallucinatory lettering.
An outstanding example of Lee Conklin’s surreal psychedelic imagery, this original Bill Graham poster captures an important moment in the development of American blues rock. It would make a compelling addition to a collection of 1960s music memorabilia, San Francisco concert posters or countercultural graphic design.
