This original 1966 Soviet sports poster was designed by Viktor Koretsky to encourage physical training and athletic development. Its Russian slogan, Khochesh byt takim — treniruysya!, translates as “If you want to be like this—train!”
The composition depicts a slender young man flexing his arm in front of a mirror. His reflection appears as a powerful, muscular athlete, surrounded by the colourful emblems of Soviet sporting organisations and dynamic red and blue forms.
Koretsky combines black-and-white photography with vivid colour to create an immediate and memorable photomontage. The contrast between the two versions of the figure communicates the poster’s message instantly, while the large blue Cyrillic lettering gives the composition a commanding visual presence.
Viktor Koretsky was a prominent Soviet graphic artist and poster designer renowned for his innovative use of photography, photomontage and bold colour. His compositions addressed political, social and public-health themes through dramatic imagery designed for mass communication.
A striking example of Soviet sports propaganda, this original poster would make an excellent addition to a collection devoted to athletics, physical culture, Viktor Koretsky, photomontage or twentieth-century graphic design.
