This original 1966 Soviet sports poster was designed by V. Rukavishnikov to celebrate athletics and collective physical culture. Combining the individual discipline of shot put with a mass parade of athletes, it presents sport as both personal achievement and organised public spectacle.
The composition is dominated by the monumental silhouette of a shot-putter preparing to throw. Around his neck hangs an oversized medal whose colourful ribbons incorporate the emblems of several Soviet sporting organisations.
A circular black-and-white photograph within the medal depicts rows of athletes marching with flags during a physical-culture parade. Rukavishnikov contrasts this photographic detail with the simplified red figure and pale blue background, creating a bold and highly graphic photomontage.
The design reflects the important role of sport within Soviet public life, where athletic training, mass demonstrations and sporting societies were promoted as expressions of health, discipline and collective strength. Its monumental scale and limited palette are characteristic of mid-century Soviet poster design.
A striking example of Soviet sporting propaganda, this original poster would make an excellent addition to a collection devoted to athletics, shot put, photomontage, physical culture or twentieth-century graphic art.
