This original 1928 French theatre poster announces the return of Art et Action from a study journey devoted to modern dramatic art in Russia and Germany. It explains that, owing to time constraints, the production of La Mort du Docteur Faust was postponed until 28 and 29 January 1928.
The programme is framed by two striking black-and-white illustrations. The upper image presents an abstract theatrical figure with mask-like features, while the lower composition depicts a sharply illuminated character surrounded by radiating lines.
The session, presented with the assistance of Groupe No. 4, explored theatrical education, culture and organisation in Russia. It also included projected documentary material, a recreation of Russian puppet theatre and Le Sultan affamé, accompanied by music by Igor Stravinsky.
Its monochrome palette, experimental imagery and carefully structured typography reflect the influence of European avant-garde theatre. The poster documents the strong interest of French theatrical circles in the innovative performance practices then developing in Russia and Germany.
A rare document of interwar experimental theatre, this original poster would make an excellent addition to a collection devoted to Art et Action, the European avant-garde, Russian theatre or 1920s graphic design.
