This original circa 1970 lithograph was designed by Bernard Villemot for Bally and its women’s footwear. Combining fashion, elegance and graphic simplicity, the image belongs to the celebrated series of advertising designs Villemot created for the Swiss luxury shoe manufacturer.
The composition depicts a stylish seated woman rendered as a graceful arrangement of elongated limbs and flowing curves. Her pose directs attention towards the brightly coloured shoes, while a further high-heeled shoe held delicately in her hand reinforces the advertised product.
Villemot employs broad areas of burgundy, magenta, grey, orange and black, enlivened by accents of yellow, blue and white. Heavy black outlines unify the composition and give the figure a sculptural presence, while the bold Bally name and Villemot’s signature complete the design.
Bernard Villemot was one of the leading French poster artists of the twentieth century. Renowned for his work for brands including Bally, Perrier and Orangina, he developed an instantly recognisable style based upon simplified silhouettes, expressive colour and elegant visual economy.
A sophisticated and highly decorative example of French fashion advertising, this original lithograph would make an excellent addition to a collection devoted to Bally, footwear, Bernard Villemot or twentieth-century graphic design.
