This original etching by Édouard Vuillard, entitled Intérieur au canapé and also known as Soir, was created around 1930. The final state of the plate was later published in 1944 by Jean-Gabriel Daragnès for Le Tombeau d’Édouard Vuillard, a posthumous tribute to the artist.

The intimate scene depicts three women gathered within a densely furnished domestic interior. Two figures occupy the patterned sofa, while another sits before them reading, their forms merging subtly with the surrounding furniture, textiles and shadows.

Vuillard builds the composition through energetic etched lines, delicate cross-hatching and rich areas of darkness. The restricted black-and-white palette heightens the quiet atmosphere of the room, while the varied textures create a remarkable sense of depth and intimacy.

A founding member of the Nabis, Édouard Vuillard was celebrated for his depictions of private interiors and everyday bourgeois life. In this etching, his characteristic interest in patterned surfaces and psychologically charged domestic spaces is translated into the direct language of printmaking.

Catalogued as Roger-Marx 62, Intérieur au canapé is an elegant example of Vuillard’s mature graphic work. Its intimate subject, refined technique and important publication history make it especially appealing to collectors of French modern art and original prints.
