This original Danish travel poster was created circa 1975 by Grønne Studie for the Danish Tourist Board. Simply titled Denmark, it promotes the country through a colourful and highly stylised interpretation of a traditional Danish townscape.
The composition presents whitewashed buildings with vivid red roofs, church towers and a lively outdoor market. A monumental fountain rises above the gathering, while the simplified figures and market stalls introduce movement and a welcoming sense of everyday life.
Soft shades of blue, pink and green contrast with the brilliant reds and yellows of the foreground. The use of flat colour, geometric silhouettes and minimal detail reflects the clarity and optimism associated with Scandinavian graphic design of the 1970s.
Grønne Studie, meaning “The Green Studio,” was a Danish design practice directed by architect and designer Ernst Lohse. The studio became known for its colourful architectural imagery and stylised interpretations of recognisably Danish landscapes and urban scenes.
With its fresh palette and distinctly modern aesthetic, this original poster is an appealing example of vintage Scandinavian tourism advertising. It would make a particularly decorative addition to a collection devoted to Denmark, travel or twentieth-century graphic design.
