This original circa 1980 French advertising poster was designed by Samivel for “Les Alpes, pays de la Chartreuse,” meaning “The Alps, Home of Chartreuse.” The image evokes the Alpine origins and monastic heritage traditionally associated with Chartreuse.

The composition depicts a monumental snow-covered mountain rising into a pale, misty sky. Within the sculptural folds of the snow, the subtle outline of a hooded Carthusian monk appears to emerge from the landscape.

Samivel employs an exceptionally restrained palette of white and delicate blue, enriched by small touches of green. The minimalist composition and almost abstract treatment of the mountain create an atmosphere of purity, mystery and contemplative silence.

Samivel was the pseudonym of French writer, illustrator and artist Paul Gayet-Tancrède. A passionate observer of the Alps, he became particularly admired for his elegant mountain imagery, combining humour, imagination and a profound sensitivity to the natural world.

A poetic and highly decorative example of French advertising design, this original poster would make an excellent addition to a collection devoted to the Alps, Chartreuse, French gastronomy or vintage commercial art.
