This original circa 1950 travel poster by Albert Brenet was created for the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, internationally known as the French Line. It promotes the company’s prestigious route connecting Le Havre and Southampton with New York during the golden age of transatlantic ocean travel.
Seen from a dramatic low viewpoint, the liner’s immense bow rises above the viewer as it cuts through the Atlantic. Its dark hull, white superstructure and distinctive red-and-black funnel create a powerful silhouette, while the churning green waves convey the vessel’s speed, weight and command of the sea.
Brenet combines precise observation with expressive, almost spontaneous brushwork. The details of the decks, lifeboats and rigging gradually dissolve into the pale background, allowing the ship to dominate the composition. Restrained gold and green typography gives the poster an elegant appearance without competing with the maritime image.
Albert Brenet was a celebrated French marine painter, illustrator and poster designer. Appointed an official painter of the French Navy, he developed an exceptional understanding of ships, ports and life at sea. His advertising work combined technical accuracy with movement and atmosphere, making him particularly suited to depicting modern transportation.
Evoking both the adventure of an Atlantic crossing and the refinement associated with the French Line, this original poster is an excellent example of post-war maritime advertising. It will particularly appeal to collectors of ocean-liner memorabilia, French travel posters and classic transportation design.
