This original 1985 poster was created for the exhibition Christo: Surrounded Islands, held at the Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence from 18 May to 30 June 1985. The exhibition documented Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s monumental environmental project realised in Biscayne Bay, Greater Miami, between 1980 and 1983.
The poster reproduces one of Christo’s characteristic preparatory compositions, combining an aerial photograph, painted areas, technical diagrams and handwritten annotations. The brilliant pink surface surrounding the island dominates the image, while the visible measurements and construction details reveal the extensive planning behind the apparently effortless installation.
Surrounded Islands was realised in May 1983, when eleven islands in Biscayne Bay were encircled by approximately 6.5 million square feet of floating pink woven polypropylene fabric. Extending 200 feet into the water from each island, the installation transformed the relationship between land, water and the Miami skyline for two weeks.
The Fondation Maeght exhibition presented drawings, models, technical plans, documents and photographs by Wolfgang Volz relating to the project. These materials demonstrate how documentation, engineering and preparatory studies formed an essential part of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s artistic practice, preserving the memory of works designed to exist only temporarily.
