Produced in Cuba in 1969, this original OSPAAAL poster announces the Week of Solidarity with the Peoples of Asia, held from September 30 to October 6. Its message appears in Spanish, English, French and Arabic, reflecting the organization’s ambition to reach an international audience and connect political movements across continents.
OSPAAAL—the Organization of Solidarity with the Peoples of Asia, Africa and Latin America—was founded in Havana following the 1966 Tricontinental Conference. Its posters became an important expression of Cuban revolutionary graphic design, supporting anti-colonial movements and campaigns for national independence throughout the developing world.
The design places the word “asia” in monumental red lettering against a deep blue background. Below, a circular globe contains overlapping portraits rendered in warm red and yellow tones. The faces are partially covered by a blue geographical grid, visually linking different peoples and territories within a single international movement.
The limited palette, photographic treatment and bold geometric construction give the poster remarkable visual clarity. Rather than depicting one particular country, the anonymous designer creates a collective image of Asia, presenting workers, civilians and revolutionary figures as part of a shared political struggle. The multilingual typography reinforces the international character of the campaign.
