Dating from circa 1935, this original mixed-media drawing depicts a black panther reclining upon a stone ledge. The work was executed after a composition by Paul Jouve, whose powerful representations of wild animals became closely associated with French Art Deco.

The description “after Paul Jouve” indicates that the drawing was created by an unidentified artist following or inspired by Jouve’s composition. It should therefore be understood as an original hand-executed work on paper, but not as a drawing by Jouve himself.

The panther’s elongated body stretches horizontally across the sheet, its limbs hanging loosely over the architectural ledge while its raised head remains watchful. Deep black tones and subtle grey highlights model the animal’s muscular form, contrasting with the pale background and the delicate touches of ochre and blue used for the stonework. The sweeping tail completes the composition with an elegant curve.

Paul Jouve (1878–1973) was one of the foremost French animal artists of the twentieth century. A painter, sculptor, engraver and illustrator, he became especially renowned for his depictions of big cats. His close observation of animals allowed him to combine anatomical accuracy with the simplified volumes and strong silhouettes characteristic of Art Deco.

This unique mixed-media drawing will appeal to collectors of animal art, Art Deco works on paper and imagery associated with Paul Jouve. Its restrained palette, imposing feline subject and generous use of negative space give it a particularly elegant decorative presence.
