Combining dramatic motor-racing photography with bold modern typography, it captures the extraordinary intensity and glamour of Formula One competition through the streets of Monte Carlo.
The photograph shows the start of the preceding 1968 Monaco Grand Prix. Graham Hill’s red, white and gold Gold Leaf Team Lotus 49 Ford accelerates away alongside a blue Matra MS10, followed closely by the remainder of the field. Smoke rises from the tyres as the cars launch from the grid, creating a powerful impression of movement, noise and controlled chaos.
Thousands of spectators crowd the pavements, balconies and temporary grandstands surrounding the circuit. Photographers and race officials stand only metres from the accelerating cars, illustrating the remarkably close relationship between drivers and public during this period. Historic Monaco rises above the scene, while advertisements for Shell, Dunlop, Marlboro, Elf, BP and Longines contribute to its unmistakable late-1960s atmosphere.
The main race took place on May 18, 1969, and was won by Graham Hill driving a Lotus-Ford. Piers Courage finished second in his Brabham-Ford, followed by Jo Siffert in another Lotus-Ford. It was Hill’s fifth Monaco victory, confirming his exceptional mastery of the demanding street circuit and establishing a record that remained unbeaten for many years.
